Winners of the 2019 Scholastic Writing Awards will be honored at a ceremony on Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at the Eudora Welty House and Garden, sponsored by the Eudora Welty Foundation and the Eudora Welty House and Garden. Acclaimed author and Mississippi native Mary Miller will deliver the keynote address. Sally Birdsall, administrator of the Scholastic Writing program for the Mississippi affiliate, has announced that awards will be presented to 157 winners, including five American Voices Nominees and nine Senior Portfolio Award winners. Other awards will include 76 Gold Keys, 121 Silver Keys, and 92 Honorable Mentions. A complete list of winners may be downloaded here

There were 931 submissions to this year’s program plus 26 Senior Portfolio, evaluated by 57 judges including  current and retired teachers, doctors, lawyers, stay-at-home moms, and published authors. Entries came from 582 students representing 121 educators.

Offered statewide, thanks to generous continuing support from the C Spire Foundation, the Scholastic Writing Awards Program attracted entries from students at several schools this year that have not participated before.

Winners and their families will be invited to attend a lunch at Millsaps College prior to the ceremony. Tours of the Welty House and Garden will be offered from 1:00-1:45 p.m., and a reception will be held in the Welty Garden before and after the ceremony.
